Birth Control

So, my boyfriend wants me to get on birth control (and he said he would pay for it starting out), and I also think it’s a good idea. For a while now I was considering getting the Depo shot, but now I am like 99% sure I do not want that since I’ve read people have gained A LOT of weight because of the shot. Anywhere from 15-100 lbs I’ve read. I’ve lost 50 pounds through low carb and I still have another 30 pounds I want to lose, so obviously I want to be on something that will not cause me to go back to where I was.

I know different birth control works differently for people. But I am really confused as to what pill to take. I’ve been reading different things from different people.

A friend was on Ortho Try Cyclene, but she got off it because she was having suicidal thoughts, but she said her cousin loved it. And her best friend was on the shot and never gained any weight. I was considering Ortho Try Cyclene or Yaz (but I have read there are a lot of reports of hair loss).

Can you guys tell me about your experience on the different types of Birth Control and what worked best for you? I realize that it will be different for everyone. But I know at this point I am most likely not going to get the Depo shot, especially since I read it really lowers your calcium levels and decreases bone density.

From what I know (I still need to get complete blood work done), I am in good health. I think I might be a little anemic, as a few days ago I tried to donate plasma my hematocrit was 36 and it has to be 38-54, but that’s either due to anemia (which I have been taking iron supplements) or nutritional deficiency (and I’ve also been taking a multivitamin).

Depo-gained weight or couldnt lose any
    Ortho-gave me migraines

  2. Visitor Says:

I take Desogen. No problem with it.

  3. Visitor Says:

ive been on ortho. . made me a raging b*tch. and my periods were still intense.

im on yaz right now and have been for about one year. its pretty amazing. no mood swings, period lasts about 2 days and is very light and my cramps are pretty much non existent. i really like it because its a low dose hormone.

    good luck!

  4. Visitor Says:

well, i’m on depo and although i know its not an option for you, i will say that i started before i started low-carbing and i’m down 38 pounds with no trouble. Any hormone added into your body can affect your weight (in losses or gains, depending on the indv.) I do take calcium supplements and eat a lot of dairy, but i don’t stress about that too much.

I think you should talk with your NP or Dr. and really go over your options. (I had fewer options because we have a history of blood clots in my family). But so many factors play into which option to choose.

I have a friend who LOVES the ring and another who swears its gross (lol).

Are you leaning toward the pill? Knowing myself, i couldn’t take a pill everyday at the same time (mostly because of the crazy schedule i had in school and working overnights). If that’s a problem, there is always the patch, which i have quite a few friends use. Gotta be under 198 for it to be most effective though.

Do you have really bad PMS? if so, there’s a pill for that. Do you only want your period a few times/year? There’s a pill for that. Acne? there’s a pill for that LOL.

So basically it all depends on your needs. I say talk it over with your NP or MD and your partner and figure out what will work best for you!

From what I’ve read in Dr. Vliet’s books she puts her patients on those that have very low doses of progesterone in them… Apparently, the higher progesterone pills are the ones that cause the weight gain…for some people!

I couldn’t take BCP’s because they would always make me very depressed, at the time even the ones with lower progesterone were still high in their dosage. It’s my understanding that the new ones are much better though!

I tried YAZ – not good for me. It made me feel like I had morning sickness. I am now on Apri (generic of Desogen). So far so good. No side effects at all starting up.

I’ve taken Apri before also with no problems. My insurance is quirky and changes on whether they will pay more for generic or name brand (for the last year or so I had to get name brand, now this year I have to go back to generic).

birth control…..

I am thinking of getting put on birth control just to regulate my periods. I go months without having my period and its so annoying because I never know when I am going to have it.

Does anyone have any advice on what birth control I should get? Will it really make me gain weight? WhatÂ’s the cheapest, etc thanks!

BC pills can be pretty different for everyone. Do you have a good OBGYN that you can talk to and trust? I always suggest you start there. If you end up with one that makes you gain, they can switch it up for ya. Lots of choices out there.
FWIW, I always liked the low-dose pills. Never had too many side effects, except loss of libido, which seemed to be a prob for me in general on hormonal BC.

    HTHs!

  2. Visitor Says:

I have a really nice dr. and I’ve been through three different prescriptions of BC. I take a low dose BC and it has a few side effects that are bad (some loss of libido, some spotting) but a lot of good – no babies , regular periods, less acne, less mood swings.

  3. Visitor Says:

I was on the low dose Lo-Ovral for about 6 years. Did me real good regulation and cramp wise.

  1. Visitor Says:

Nope but I had a regulat 10 yr IUD up until a year ago and had not a problem with it.

  2. Visitor Says:

I have the Mirena IUD. It was inserted early Nov./2005. I spotted for almost 3 months, lightly. This was still better than the very heavy periods I have had most of my life. I’m 49 years old.
The insertion was no big deal I did premedicate with 3 Motrin before I left for the office.

My periods are lighter and controllable(not sure if that’s a word), but I’m having thyroid issues that have made the cycles more frequent then I’d like.

  3. Visitor Says:

I just got a Merina IUD about a week and a half ago. It was the first day of my cycle and the doctor told me it would be best to insert it that day. Now my period seems it will never stop. I know it’s only been a week and a half but how long does this last? I’ve read things like 3 mos, 6 mos….I don’t think I can handle that while trying to do Cardio every day.

By the way, Hi. I’m new on this page. Married, 3 little girls (12, 10, and 9). I’m 32 years old. Finally decided to lose weight. I gained 40 lbs a few years back when I was sent overseas away from my family. It’s time to reverse the clock. Been on Low Carb (Atkins, I guess) for about a month and a half. Loving it…I’m not hungry very often and have found so many things to cook low carb. I love watching ‘Blaine’s Low Carb Cooking’ and ‘Low Carb and Lovin it. My husband it a weight lifter so the veges and protein work for him too.

  4. Visitor Says:

I have the cooper one (10 years). I had it inserted in March 2006 after my daughters birth. I spotted had some heavy periods, irregular periods and a heavy flow but now I love it. My old insurance paid for everything, my only payment was a $10 co-pay. My DH and I have spontaneous sex, no worrying about forgetting pills..I love it!

Birth Control

I have been on Atkins for about 21 days now, I havent cheated but I’ve only lost 5 lbs and now I am stalled. I read in the Atkins book that if you are taking any birth control you will stall..

Question: Is any one on here on birth control? If so how is it affecting your weight loss?

I am about to quit this or get rid of the birth control.

Any advice

thanks

It all depends on an individual. I personally didn’t have problems, and I was on Yasmin. What kind of BCP are you on?

Stall is also common, especially after induction. Are you losing inches? If so, you’re not stalled. Have you tried other stall busters? Don’t give up!

  2. Visitor Says:

I am on the patch …

I started losing inches and just put it back on. It’s like i am gain weight instead of losing and i am still on induction and doing about 20 carbs per day

  3. Visitor Says:

i am on the patch, and i only lose weight the week i take it off. otherwise i pretty much stay the same. i have lost a pound or two during my normal on weeks this month, so maybe my body is getting used to it. i’m like you….i would rather abstain then be fat!

  4. Visitor Says:

Moonbean: i guess that is what i have to do … just abstain until i get the weight off. And then go back to it. But that was me too. I lost the pounds on my off week too.

  5. Visitor Says:

I am on Yasmin and it has not affected my weight loss at all.
But, it has a different hormone mix and is supposed to work as a diuretic to keep your wt down anyway.

  6. Visitor Says:

I was on the patch. Wasn’t having much weight loss, so I threw it away about 6 weeks ago. I have to say that I haven’t really noticed much difference in weight loss since then. Maybe it takes a few weeks to kick in??

Good Luck! My mom said that "pregnancy makes you fat, too!!"

    Beth

  7. Visitor Says:

I couldn’t lose 5-8lbs and thought it might be cause I was on the pill. I quit taking it in Jan or Feb and it made no difference. I finally lost the weight after making some changes in what I eat and the amounts.

  8. Visitor Says:

I just talked to the doctor about this again yesterday.

I was on depo for almost 8 years, and gained about 8 pounds a year while on it. Then, the last year I was using it, I gained 60 pounds in 9 months.

I thought it was due to me simply not watching my diet all those years, and those last 60 pounds packed on right around the time I had quit smoking. and I TOTALLY ADMIT eating like a pig and being hungry all the time, and I DO take responsibility for it. I had never suspected anything "wrong" with the depo shot, and honestly was quite pleased with it. It was my doctor who immediately felt strongly that 60 pounds in 9 months was the direct result of the depo shot. The did some blood tests, and he said I had been on it way too long and instructed me to stop using it, or any other hormone based birthcontrol. He said it would be extremely difficult for me to shed any weight while taking it.

We decided that getting my blood pressure down and the weight off via a proper diet was a bit more important right now then pregnancy protection, so his "prescription" was the Atkins Diet and a box of rubbers.

So…. fast forward a few months, and thanks to the wonderful depo shot I had not had a period since 1995. Six weeks ago I finally started my first menstrual cycle in 8 years. It hasn’t stopped yet.

Yes folks, that’s right! I’ve been having mine since the 4th of July.
    Lucky me.

Went to the doctor yesterday concerning this never ending cycle of mine…. and he said that what he would NORMALLY do is put me on the pill in order to regulate my cycle, but he didn’t want to do that with me because he said it would "slow weight loss considerably" if I was on the pill.

I don’t know WHY it’s like that, I just know that’s what my doctor said. I don’t know if that’s a blanket statement in general for everyone or just a statement in reference to my messed up hormonal state.

They did a blood test yesterday, still waiting for the results. He says if it comes back normal that I’ll just have to endure the never ending TOM a bit longer. He doesn’t want me back on BC until I reach my goal weight.

Personally, I’m considering just having my tubes tied.

    Best of luck.

  9. Visitor Says:

I actually talked to my doctor about this very subject about a week ago – when I went to tell her I was on Atkins and I wanted my blood tests done.

She’s very up on women’s health issues (which is why I love her so) and she told me that recent studies are showing that BC doesn’t cause a significant amount of weight gain, a few pounds but not much more during the entire course of using it.

I’m on Brevocane (sp) which actually changes hormone levels every week and I’m still losing. She said she would be much more concerned if I was on anti-depressants – which I laughed and said if you took me off my BC pills and I had to deal with hormone changes I would have to be on Prozac!!

    Just my 2 cents worth.

  10. Visitor Says:

I’m blaming my slow loss on the BC pill. I lost 3 pounds on induction and about a pound a week for the few month after that. Now I’m lucky to get a pound down after TOM visits. It could be because I’m getting close to my goal weight too, but I expected more than 3 pounds lost on induction…and I was very strict and by the book too. I’ve tried lowering my calories more, but then I end up weak and famished a week later and end up overdoing it on legal foods, so I decided that I’m just gonna have to lose these last few slow, because I DON’T want to be pregnant right now.

birth control

Hi, I’ve been in induction for about…three weeks? four weeks? somewhere around there. Anyway, I haven’t seen any weight loss except for the end of my period. Afterwards, when I began taking the hormones, my weight shot up an unpleasant 2 lbs. Does anyone else have a problem similar to this? Is there any way to remedy this situation without having to come off bc?

What birth control are you on?

When I was on the shot, no matter what I did, I could NOT lose weight, and gained a lot.

  2. Visitor Says:

i’m on the pill…i believe it’s called mircette? or something like that haha. i believe it’s a low dosage though.

Birth control

This may be a dumb question, but if you start birth control in the middle of the diet, will it affect your weight loss? Alesse birth control to be specific. Thanks!

Honestly….I’m not familiar with your brand of birth control. When I was on the pill (it was a brand from Europe and I can’t think of the name) it stalled me. When I stopped taking it I started to lose again.

That’s definitely not the case with everyone. I remember a post about it before and many women say they lose just fine with it.

  3. Visitor Says:

I’m also not familiar with Alesse.

I will say that when I was on the birth control patch it made me gain. I was trying sooooo hard to lose and the pounds just kept adding up and the scale climbed! As soon as I switched to nuvaring the weight came right off. I never had weight gain problem with the pill but stopped using it simply because of the hassle.

  4. Visitor Says:

I think it depends on your body. I however have had horrible problems with gaining weight from birth control. All of it! Even Yaz… which said it does not make you gain weight. However, I am still able to lose weight with low carb diets. So, it may be harder for you. You should still be able to lose, though.

  5. Visitor Says:

I was on ortho evra and I lost at a very slow pace. I was losing like 6 pounds a month if I were lucky.. I stopped the pill and got paragard and I lost 39 pounds in 55 days… So I know that the hormones in the pill effect me..

  6. Visitor Says:

Atkins ‘72 says that you shouldn’t start his diet whilst using birth control pills… As those pills wreck havoc with my psyche there might be something to it, nevertheless I did lose 20 lbs..

    It’s different for everyone…

  7. Visitor Says:

My ob/gyn and I had a discussion about this a few months ago when I was taking Levora. I lost weight when I was taking these but my mood swings were terrible! Too emotional and needy. I’m back on Sprintec and I have to be careful of what I eat now. If I ate the way I used to I will balloon up fast! I don’t do low-carb. More of a meditteranean style but wihtout the pita, hummus, and feta cheese.

  8. Visitor Says:

i’m on yaz… and at first i had trouble losing… but lately i’ve had no problem at all…

i really think that it depends… everyone is different…

  9. Visitor Says:

I have had no problem while on BC pills. I have been on them 14 years (actually half my life), but I am thinking of getting off them and switching to Paragard. Hope thry workout for you.

  10. Visitor Says:

Birth control pills never had an effect on me either way. I am certain you will continue to progress just fine.
