Owlie’s Journal
I started Atkins induction on January 5, 2009 at 260 lbs.
This is my second time around; I had done it (well, easily and enjoyably) from 2002 until 2004, losing about 45 lbs. I stopped because a) I reached a plateau, and b) my dad passed away, causing chaos in my life and total apathy about the whole diet thing. I gradually gave up my low carb woe over about 2 years (2004 to 2006), when I just completely abandoned it altogether. I’ve been eating high carb, anything goes for the last couple of years, and finally decided enough is enough. I am starting again this time for good. I gave myself several months to say goodbye to the old, bad foods, and organize so that I would be totally ready and excited about restarting.
I was 260 on January 5.
I was 253.5 on January 12.
I am 250.5 on January 23.
My first goal is to get into size 14 jeans and size large shirts. I’m starting in very loose 18s and XL/1X shirts.
I have been reading the boards and I decided to try more of a modified Atkins 72 this time. So far so good; my only vice at this point are floopsies (made with eggs, cream cheese and a little coconut flour). Obviously, not part of the 72 food list, however, I did give up all bars and shakes (my old vice) and this time around I’m not drinking diet soda, using a ton of whipped cream, and I’m making sure to stay within 3-4 oz of hard cheese only. It seems to be working so far. I have no appetite problems and I am consistantly pink with ketostix (usually, I don’t go much past trace, so that is sort of an improvement).
I did not exercise much during the first week. Second week I took a few 30 minute walks. This week, so far, I have walked alot, though not as ‘exercise walks’, but just of necessity. I have also been trying to park further away from things and I’m not allowing myself to be lazy (asking people to bring me things or otherwise avoiding movement).
My goal is to get 30 minutes of movement (walking, heavy gardening, hiking, heavy housework, treadmill etc), plus 2-3 days a week of weight training as my normal routine. I expect to have this as my routine by or before February 9.
And that’s how I’m starting. More tomorrow!

I will check in on you. I really like the journaling, keeps me accountable and I have met some great people.

Today’s food was pretty good. I’m in a steak and egg mood at the moment. I made some roasted asparagus too – yummy.
I could have moved more today. Found myself very tired, but that is because I did 12 hours of driving and running around yesterday; tomorrow I will get a good walk in no matter what.
