Still Hungry When I’m Full – It’s All In My Head
I don’t seem to feel full unless I’m stuffed. This is something I’ve been battling and it’s really tough! I’ll have a meal and ask myself honestly "are you full?" The answer is often yes, I’m sufficiently full…..but I still seem "hungry" unless I’m stuffed! How do I teach myself to be satisfied with just a little full and stop myself from eating until I’m totally-up-to-the-brim-full? Often (maybe 75% of the time) I can assert enough willpower to step away from the table, or the food, or whatever but I still end up with that nagging feeling of wanting more even when I’m physically no longer really hungry. And then there are those times when my willpower loses out and I continue to eat. Are binging problems ever really conquered? Will this be a battle all my life?

I have this exact same problem. Unless I am actively doing something at night, eating is my hobby! Watching to see the responses. :sigh:

What, a love affair with food?
I think it’s a battle that will haunt many of us on and off.
But I believe there are ways to overcome. But it takes a lot of patience, effort, and conscious positive mind over matter determination.
Dwelling on the desire to eat more is dwelling on a negative.
Replacing that negativity with a positive mental and/or physical reinforcement for what you’ve accomplished will help bring you one step closer to winning the battle.

I’m just wondering if I can retrain myself and will eventually be happy feeling "moderately full" instead of not being satisfied until I’m "overstuffed" *sigh*

You say that your WOE is your own LC creation – have you gotten sugar in all forms out of your diet?

pretty much, I eat as close to 100% natural foods as possible, almost nothing processed. I’m not eating fruit right now either. I think the closest thing I’m having to sugar right now is the dairy that I eat.
Having said that I do have a small bit of low sugar dark chocolate every 3 days or so.

Just from my own experience – any sugar in my body seems to send a direct message telling me i’m still hungry even though I just ate a side of beef! I do feel your pain!

i know what you mean.. i literally love the feeling of being overstuffed but only because its the only time i know that i don’t want to eat any more food and that is the best feeling in the world.. i hate wanting to eat all the time. im a very all or nothing kind of person.. if i could quit food cold turkey i could totally do it but since i need it in order to live i have a hard time managing myself. that being said i have found that if i drink an 8-16 oz glass of water while i’m prepping the food and have another 8-16 oz while i’m comsuming the food i can usually feel pretty stuffed. also i have started to feel a great sense of satisfaction with myself when i am able to leave some of the food on the plate and push it away saying i’ve had enough.. it’s a little game i play and i feel good when i can do it. also i definitely agree with the above posters saying to have a hobby or something to keep you occupied so avoid snacking too much. also perhaps preplan your snacks and have them already counted out carb/calorie wise and ration then to yourself over the day as you see fit.

after 30 minutes of not eating, re-evaluate how u feel. if u are still hungry, have some more. I have posted more than several times in the past on the subject of portion control (the difficulty in obtaining it), the leptin/leptin receptor problem. 1 of the things I promised i would do in 2009, is put myself to the 30 minute test. sometimes, i do need to have more, sometimes not until several hours later. sometimes, i can go to bed w/o a 2nd or 3rd dinner. i So know what you’re talking about-that stuffed feeling is a comfortable feeling in many ways (even though it doesn’t make logical sense).
I had one of those days this week…..no matter how much protein/fat I consumed, I just wanted to keep shoving more in….even though I wasn’t physically hungry. I didn’t totally blow the carb budget, but I certainly ate too much and was feeling miserable afterwards.
Two things that I do when the desire to eat when not hungry (and most of the time it works) is to either distract myself by doing something (knitting, net surfing, reading, anything really) or to make myself a cup of tea.

I know how dumb this sounds, but if I take a salad size plate, fill it with what ever is for dinner (or any meal) I *feel* like I’ve had a very satisfying full meal.
I have always had a portion-control (ok, to be blunt – I could eat the whole thing) problem and honestly – the salad size plate works for me – and I even fix salad in a small bowl, smaller than cereal size, to keep me from eating the whole head of lettuce w/goodies added.
