Got my follow up blood work done…

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

I was quite anemic, 9.4, was my hemoglobin count, so the doc wrote a script for 325mg of Ferrous sulfate two wks ago. I started it. They tested my serum iron and my Total Iron Binding Capicity last Saturday. They call me last night to tell me to stop taking the ferrous sulfate because both levels are very high, (Serum "well over 200" and TIBC "Above 500").

So being the freak I am, I started looking at WebMD and wikipedia…NOT a good idea!

I go back for more blood work next wk….So now I know that my anemia isn’t caused by a lack of iron!

Guess I will get the March thread going.
So the 3 pound loss stuck plus an additional pound so I am down 4 pounds this week for a total of 28 pounds since 1/5/09.
How is everyone else doing?

Has Anyone Done the Fat Fast?

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I hope I’m not beginning to sound like the new whiner on the block, but I am seeing the same kind of results on Atkins Induction now (almost at 4 weeks in) that I always have: initially drop a little weight, and then just bounce around that weight indefinitely.

I lost 3 pounds the first week, 1 the second. Then in the last 11 days, I’m just up and down 2 pounds. Today, I’m up. (This is after having a day yesterday of being hungry a lot and eating more than usual.)

Last week, I started taking measurements. Even those are bouncing around. I was down 3/4 inch on my waist mid-week, but today back to where I was the first time I measured.

I’ve tried cutting out cheese. I’ve avoided all sweeteners (the one time I did try a little Splenda, it was just too sweet and gave me a headache). I don’t know exactly how many calories or grams each of fat and protein I’m getting, but I’m keeping my carbs always under 20, and usually right at 15 per day.

I’m thinking of trying the fat fast, though I dread it. And I’m not at all sure how eating cream cheese and macadamia nuts will cause things to change in my body. The total carb count will still be around 12g per day. Is that a enough difference to do anything? Has anyone here done the fat fast? If so, for how long, and what did you eat, and did it work?

Well, I’m off to the treadmill, again.

Restarting is Hard, But It Can Be Done

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I read a post here at Atkins ‘72 by Atkins72Mama talking about struggling and not succeeding at restarting Atkins, despite successful low-carb weight loss in the past. She wrote exactly what I went through time and time again — my many many failed attempts.

Finally, I was able to restart LC. And because getting through those first 3-4 days was soooo hard for me time and time again, I thought I’d describe how I did it in case that will help Atkins72Mama and others. There’s nothing revolutionary in how I restarted, so you can do it too!

First, I did a little pre-planning. I:
— got all the carb foods out of my home.
— asked a friend to start low-carbing with me.
— decided on a start date.

Then some luck:
— I happened to find the 1972 Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution at a used book store and bought it.

Day 1:
— I weighed myself.
— I told myself, "not now!" whenever I got an urge to eat carbs.
— I made myself walk. (I’d become a couch potato, and although walking 20 minutes left me tired, it’s true that exercise reduces hunger and cravings.)
— I started reading my "new" Atkins book. It improved my understanding of the impact of carbs and kept me determined to low-carb.
— I spent time here at LowCarbFriends, reading and posting.
— And, of course, I ate only Induction foods.

Day 2:
— I weighed myself again, and the number was lower.
— I walked again, 30 minutes this time. Walking was easier than yesterday.
— Again, I told my craving "not now." I felt a little sad, a little depressed. My body missed carbs, but I kept insisting, "no, not now."
— I ate right.
— I continued to visit LowCarbFriends.
— And I continued reading Atkins. I carried the book with me too, from bedside to the living room. When I went to the library, I took the book along in case I felt like reading a little while I was there.

Day 3:
Day 3 was just like Day 2. Another weigh in and loss. Another half-hour of walking. Eating right. More time at LowCarbFriends. More reading of Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution. A little more sorrow, and more "not now" statements to the carb monster.

Day 4:
I woke up free of carb cravings. I wasn’t hungry at all. I felt energetic and joyful, not sad. I’d made it! What a blessing! (Since then, staying on track has been fairly easy. I keep doing what works for me and the craving are gone, gone, gone!)

To anyone struggling to restart, my advise is try again! Find a way that works for you. It’s so worth it!!!

It Can Be Done!

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

To all the posters who said it can be done you just have to do it— you were right!!!!

I’ve had every excuse to get off plan but I haven’t.

We are in the process of moving so fast food has been very convenient for my family but I’m choosing to carry my small cooler with string cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, strawberries, and turkey for roll-ups. And I have to say it feels so much better than feeling like crap because "I went off plan".

It works, if you work it.

So keep saying it.
