Obesity shortens your life, British study finds

Being obese can take years off your life and in some cases may be as dangerous as smoking, a new study says.

The huge study concludes that for every five points above an ideal body mass index, a person’s premature death risk rises by about one-third.

Researchers combined 57 studies focusing on almost 900,000 adults in North America and Europe to analyze the relationship between BMI and the risk of dying from particular diseases.

BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and is considered a simple and reliable way of measuring body weight. For this study, an ideal body weight was defined as a body mass index of 22.5 to 25.

The study found that an increase of BMI by five points over normal — from 25 to 30 — increased the odds of death:

from heart disease or stroke by 40 per cent
from diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease by 60-120 per cent
from lung disease 20 per cent
from cancer 10 per cent
For those with moderate obesity – a BMI between 30 and 35 — the added pounds shortened the average lifespan by two to four years.

For those at extreme levels of obesity — BMI of 40 to 45 — the added pounds shortened the average lifespan by eight to 10 years — comparable to the effects of smoking.

There was also a higher death rate among those who had a BMI well below the ideal range. This was due mainly to smoking-related diseases, the authors said while noting that further study is needed to understand the reasons behind the finding.

The results are published in an article on The Lancet website and will appear in an upcoming edition of the journal.

One of the study authors, Dr. Gary Whitlock of the Clinical Trial Service Unit at the University of Oxford, UK, says the findings are further proof that obesity excess weight shortens life expectancy.

"Weighing a third more than the optimum shortens lifespan by about three years. For most people, a third more than the optimum means carrying 20 to 30 kilograms (50 to 60 pounds) of excess weight.

"If you are becoming overweight or obese, avoiding further weight gain could well add years to your life.”

I’m thinking: I wonder if this can be a motivator or perhaps folks are willing to give a few years of their life to eat what they want.

Steak n Cheese where have you been all my lowcarbin life?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

So I bought a package of seasoned steak strips today and thought I’d do something as simple as add some chedder cheese to it. Didn’t know it would be so delicious that I went back for seconds. And also to add that I had a really great salad with turkey, chedder cheese, and the kens 0g carb ceasar dressing with bacon ranch dressing. Made my steak taste even better. I have to say I had a great dinner tonight guys. I will be eating this at work tomorrow.

Lean for Life Lindora, I have a question please :)

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Hi, I posted this on the LFL forum, but no answer.

I just got the LFL Phase 1 book and I am in the process of reading it.

Since I’ve only been on Atkins before, I was wondering about being in ketosis with LFL. I’m stunned at the amount of carbs LFL recommends, particularly to get into ketosis as compared to Atkins. Fifty to 100 g of carbs seems like I would just chunk on the weight instead of getting into ketosis!!??

Am I missing something in my head here, because with Atkins we start out with 15-20 carbs per day to get into ketosis and some people aren’t able to get into ketosis even then?!

LFL looks pretty attractive to me, as I feel I’m stalling on Atkins (I’m 45 too *sigh*). I really appreciate anybody doing LFL taking the time to answer

Healthy Life Bread/Dormitory Living?

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

1. I’m about to begin my third week on induction. I haven’t cheated once, but I’ve been having some severe cravings, most recently for bread and butter. I can’t use any of the Induction bread recipes because I live in a dormitory, but I was wondering if Healthy Life bread (5 net carbs) is acceptable while on induction?

2. I also had an insatiable sweet tooth before beginning LC, and I feel that demon starting to creep up on me. Does anyone have any super simple recipes for induction that might help curb that? My room comes fully equipped with a mini fridge, microwave, and a double-burner I brought with me.

Don’t let anyone tell you doing LC on a college campus is easy!!!
