The Paleo Diet

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

The Paleo Diet is based on the fact that the human genome has not changed since the time of our Paleolithic (Stone Age) ancestors. Our bodies are basically the same as theirs and yet our diet is vastly different.
They ate a natural diet of meat, nuts, seeds, berries, small fruit, roots and leafy vegetation. The ate very little if any grains since they had to be processed by grinding and easily became rancid. Legumes were also rarely eaten since they had to be soaked and cooked for a long period. They did not drink milk after mother’s weaned their children at about 2-3 years of age, so did not consume dairy products. Many modern dietary related illnesses were not present during Paleolithic times and came into being after the beginning of agriculture. Our Paleolithic ancestors were tall, muscular and strong. They died of broken bones, infections or because they were attacked by wild animals but not from poor nutrition. Many researchers believe that if modern humans returned to the diet of their ancient ancestors they too could avoid dietary related problems and poor health. The Paleo Diet is very simple. Just eat meat, eggs, fruit (eat less fruit if you have a lot of weight to lose), non-starchy vegetables and avoid sugar (except for a little honey) and grains. Also avoid processed packaged and canned food as much as possible because of added salt and sugars. Make water your main beverage (a little brewed coffee or tea is OK though).

I hope you will join me on the Paleo Diet. I will include articles about it as well as recipes in future posts.

Paleo Diet Menus

Friday, January 16th, 2009

I have tried many diets but have found that the SIMPLEST low carb diet to follow is the Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain. It is just eating lean meat, fish & seafood, poultry, eggs, fruit & veggies, but NO grains, starchy veggies or packaged or canned food and no sugar, except for a little honey if you need a sweetener.

So here’s my menus:

1/15/09

Breakfast-Omelet with peppers & onions, small breakfast steak
Snack- 1/2 banana, 1/8 c. chopped walnuts
Lunch- large tossed salad with chicken strips
Snack- 1/2 banana, 1/8 c. chopped walnuts
Dinner- cube steaks, tossed salad, Brussel sprouts
Dessert- 1/2 c. blueberries sprinkled with sliced almonds

Paleo diet

Hi,

After trying every other diet under the sun, I am doing the Paleo Diet. Essentially it means eating as much like our prehistoric ancestors as possible. Of course most of don’t hunt, so essentially it means eating grass fed meat, organic fruits and veggies and no grains and no processed food. Its really pretty simple. No counting calories, no induction–just eating naturally.

Please help, can digest grains and lactose, need low carb paleo recipes!

Sorry, it’s supposed to say "can’t" in the title. I’ve recently transitioned into a low carb paleo diet, due to difficulties digesting dairy products and grains. Does anyone have some recipes that I can make? I’ve basically been eating fish and vegetables for the last couple months and I really need some variety and excitement. Fat and caloreis is not an issue, just as long it is low-carb! I’d love recipes for anything really, including desserts!

Thanks,
-Cass

Does anyone here follow The Paleo Diet?

Paleo Anyone?

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Hello all–

It has been a long time since I posted here.

I did Atkins in 2003/2004 and lost close to 20 pounds. An ankle injury sidelined me, and my eating has been all over the place. So, as you can probably figure, I gained most of it back.

Then, this past 8 weeks, I tried weight watchers. I lost 6 pounds, but I have been unbelievably sick eating a higher carb diet. I’ve had problems eating dairy in the past, and it seems now that wheat/corn/sugar will make me even sicker.

So anyway, I’m back to lower carb living. I’m thinking of trying The Paleo Diet (I have ordered the book from the library). The good think about Paleo (in my understanding) is FRUIT! and nuts (although these are both things they suggest you cut when you stall). It is no dairy, no grains, no beans, no tubers (sweet potatoes, potatoes), no coffee or alcohol.

I know some of it becomes cave-man living (eating raw food, including raw meat etc), but I am not willing to eat raw meat at this point.

I did a search, and I didn’t see a thread on this. Has anyone tried Paleo? I think it is supposed to be a lot like Protein Power, but I haven’t been able to figure out the connection.

I really do need to stay away from dairy, corn, wheat, sugar as a lifestyle, not a diet, and that is part of the appeal for me.

Any wise words would be appreciated.
