Questions for those who’ve quit or are quitting sugar, grains etc

Friday, March 20th, 2009

How does for ex Stevia affect you? I’m thinking mainly about cravings, not weight loss effect. My thinking now is to avoid any kind of sugar (sugar, honey, maple syrup, dried fruit etc) except raw fruit. I’ve never used artificial sweeteners and never would (hey, health obsessed vegetarian for ten years ). For baking I just use cocoa, cream, vanilla powder or raw fruit. It’s not the real thing but it satisfies my longing for festiveness without me starting to binge. Is Stevia a good choice or does it set off cravings for you? I’ve never tried it so I know very little of its effects and now is not really a good time for me to experiment having just come out of the sugar daze.

And what about sprouted grain products, like sprouted bread? Do any of you eat sprouted grains and how does it affect you?

The reason I’m asking is that I’m sensing eating no sugar and no grains like bread is going to give me a "hollow" feeling at times like something is missing from my eating (it already has), and if there are foods that brighten up your eating experience without leading to binges, they might be worth trying.

I tried making oopsies yesterday and though they looked lovely mine tasted more like mini-omelettes than bread. Good yes, but still omelettish.

A few questions (Phase 1)

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Hi everyone,
I am on day 3 and have a few questions.
I ordered my book already, but in the meantime I need some guidance.

—————————–

1) Are we allowed to use whey protein powder on SBD? Phase 1? 2? 3?

I use Designer Whey in French Vanilla.
1 scoop = 100 calories, 2g fat, 1g saturated, 55mg cholesterol, 3g carbohydrates, 0g fiber, 2g sugar, 18g protein.

Would that be OK for phase 1?
I would add a scoop with a tablespoon of PB & 8 oz of Hood calorie countdown milk.

2) For phase 1, can I make my own meal plan based on the food list, or do I have to stick to the preset meal plan of protein, 2 cups veggies, 1 T fat?

3) Is there a limit on the number of fat grams we can have each day? or how many grams per meal?

4) On the phase 1 food list theres a section for "other fat choices" as shown below. Are those type of fats limited? I see serving sizes listed next to them. How should I use those type of fats? 1 a day? Or?

Other Fat Choices:
Avocado – 1/3 whole = 1 TBS oil
Guacamole – 1/2 cup = 1 TBS oil
Margarine – Chose those that do not contain Trans Fatty Acids such as Fleishmann’s Premium Olive Oil or Smart Balance
Mayonnaise – Regular – 1 TBS
Mayonnaise – Low Fat – 2 TBS (avoid varieties made with high fructose corn syrup)
Olives (Green or Ripe) 15 = 1/2 TBS oil
Salad Dressing – 2 TBS. Use those that contain 3 grams of sugar or less per 2 TBS. Best choices contain canola or olive oil. Low carb salad dressings may also be used if they meet these guidelines.

Newbie with some questions.

Hello all. Let me introduce myself. I am 33 and a bit overweight. 5/8" and 171lbs. I’m not happy about it because i have done everything right. I work out 5x’s a week and my work out consists of weight training, yoga, and I run 12-15 miles a week. So, it’s not like i am lazy and don’t work out. And it’s not the intensity either because my heart rate during my cardio is over 160.

High cholesterol is in my family, so even though I only eat egg whites, I don’t eat dairy or red meat, I drink soy, I use Pam when I cook, I don’t eat shellfish….i still have an insanely high cholesterol with the LDL very high (my triglycerides are normal though).

I guess I am kind of venting because people around me just think I eat fast food or they think that i need to work out harder.
My question is, can some people metabolize carbs better than others? I’m Asian and I see how many of them can consume mass quantities of rice and noodles everyday. I cut my carbs back once and only consumed a cup or rice or noodles once a day, or just a sandwich once a day and this got me no where but heavier.

I’ve done the Atkins about 8 years ago and it really worked. I got off of it and decided to eat healthy and small meals and well, what other people ate and now I am at the heaviest I have ever been. People that eat carbs like my boy friend that has a metabolism of a hummingbird…do not seem to understand.
Is my body different where I can’t metabolism carbs like they can?

Questions about diuretics

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

I have been taking doctor-prescribed water pills for a blood pressure condition.

What affect does this have on low carbing and does drinking a lot of water make it better or worse?

Cheesecake in muffin tin questions

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I need to make cheesecake for about 35 people, and was thinking cheesecake in muffin tins would be easier than making 3 cheesecakes. If anyone has done this before, please let me know if my idea will work. I’ve read a few LCF posts and some say they sink in the middle, and some don’t. I was thinking if they did, maybe I could do a 5 minute sour cream topping. I’ve read different cooking times. I realize it will be shorter than a full size cheesecake. I was thinking of going with 300 degrees for 20 minutes. I want to use red heart cupcake liners (sprayed) with crust, then a little ganache, a few raspberries, then cheesecake filling. To decorate I want to drizzle on a little ganache, then put a berry on top, or make a raspberry sauce. For display I thought I would put about 9 per plate raised at different levels with red cloth draped over the props. I guess that’s it, does anyone have any advice or comment?

Questions for Fawn…hormones and endometriosis

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Hi Fawn,

I’m posting this because I saw that you had some input for someone else with period pain so I thought that you might have some good information for me regarding endometriosis.

I’m 41 and I have endometriosis about as bad as you can get it. We have tried for 10 years to have a baby…but I haven’t even had so much as a miscarriage which would at least suggest that I could get pg. Of course, I am glad that I haven’t had to experience that. I can take two vicadin and still be in horrid pain with my tom but by using a heating pad on my tummy and on my back I can make it through. I need to go back to using the hot water bottle though…I was having a really bad period and used the heating pad and I have had a major surgery (laparotomy) for the endo so my lower tummy is pretty numb….and I was so sad about this…I burned my tummy all up and down the 7 inch long star and had blisters. Its bad enough that I feel like damaged goods with the endo but then I go and hurt myself. It just added insult to injury. Anyway…I had to go back on the pill after being off for a year to try to get pg – I just couldn’t take the pain any longer and needed a break. So I am back on the pill. I also have a microadenoma which is just a tiny little speck of a tumor on my pituitary gland which causes increased prolactin so I lactate a little tiny bit. It must be expressed to even see it but I am affected by the elevated prolactin. It can be lowered by taking cabergoline but I’m not on it right now because the prolactin does not need to be lowered if I am not trying to get pg.

Just so you know…I did ask my gyne/endo about getting pg at 41 with my kind of issues and he said it would be basically like winning the lottery so I know how slim my chances are.

I would at least like to get off the pill though. Have you had any luck at all with endo patients reducing their pain with homeopathic medicine or natural remedies? Is it possible to balance hormones while staying on the pill?

I’m just wondering what you think and appreciate any information that you can offer. I think that staying on the pill is probably the best plan of action for me but would really like to give getting pg another chance. Its probably my very last chance at having a baby…I am really running out of time.

Thanks,

Jody
