Questions for those who’ve quit or are quitting sugar, grains etc

Friday, March 20th, 2009

How does for ex Stevia affect you? I’m thinking mainly about cravings, not weight loss effect. My thinking now is to avoid any kind of sugar (sugar, honey, maple syrup, dried fruit etc) except raw fruit. I’ve never used artificial sweeteners and never would (hey, health obsessed vegetarian for ten years ). For baking I just use cocoa, cream, vanilla powder or raw fruit. It’s not the real thing but it satisfies my longing for festiveness without me starting to binge. Is Stevia a good choice or does it set off cravings for you? I’ve never tried it so I know very little of its effects and now is not really a good time for me to experiment having just come out of the sugar daze.

And what about sprouted grain products, like sprouted bread? Do any of you eat sprouted grains and how does it affect you?

The reason I’m asking is that I’m sensing eating no sugar and no grains like bread is going to give me a "hollow" feeling at times like something is missing from my eating (it already has), and if there are foods that brighten up your eating experience without leading to binges, they might be worth trying.

I tried making oopsies yesterday and though they looked lovely mine tasted more like mini-omelettes than bread. Good yes, but still omelettish.

Possibly Stupid Sugar Question

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I am having a rather easy time giving up the carbs, which in Asia is very difficult. I wake up to 2 cups of coffee with skim milk and sugar each day. I do not use any artificial sweeteners, as I really try to eat whole foods and the sweeteners upset my stomach and increase cravings.

This is a habit that I can’t seem to break. I look forward to my coffee and it is my greatest food pleasure/drug. I have no other sugar besides this during the day and my meals contain tons of dark green veggies, eggs and lean protein. I also have no need to snack if I eat 3x a day. I have given up wine now as well, another one of life’s great pleasures.

What impact will this coffee have on my weight loss? I have tried to get used to drinking it unsweetened but to no avail. I drink unsweetened tea and never go near any type of soft drink.

Thanks,
Chinamom

Fitday – WTH? Doesn’t show sugar in anything!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

No matter what food I look at (and even when I try to customize it), it only shows:
Fat
cholesterol
sodium
potassium
Carb
Protein
Alcohol

I even put in chocolate pudding and other sweet foods and still only show these four categories. And the alcohol category is always 0

This is the first time I’ve tried fitday, am I doing something wrong?

Thank you.

But NOT Rita’s. a small has 14 carbs! (plus mine only has sf pink grapefruit

So has anyone found any really good LC ones??

Low fat, sugar free ice cream recipes

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Hi, does anyone have a recipe for low fat, sugar free ice cream? I found this recipe, don’t know if it is good or not. I will try it soon.

Non-Fat & No Added Sugar Vanilla Ice Cream

Serves 12

A delicious fat-free alternative to traditional high fat ice cream.

3 tsp unflavored gelatin
3 cup skim milk
stevia or splenda
3 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbsp water
1 Tbsp rum or vodka

Directions:
Mix gelatin with boiling water and stir until it dissolves.

Dissolve sweetener in skim milk over a medium heat without letting the mixture boil.

Remove from the heat and add the gelatin mixture. Stir in vanilla.

Pour into a shallow container and freeze until the mixture has set but not frozen solid.

Mix with an electric beater until the mixture is white and fluffy. It should be at least double it’s original volume. Freeze until solid.
