Your thoughts on Hormone Therapy…

I was just curious after watching Oprah and Suzanne Somers today and the hormone program.

Suzanne uses estrogen and progesterone cream and says she feels wonderful, etc..etc., lost weight, has energy..etc…They are prescribed by her doctor and have to be in perfect balance for her body. She is 62..

Now..I don’t use anything like that..I have had a hysterectomy so I’m hormoneless..(but did have a pre-cancer cell), so I’m leery of estrogen..

Anyone have any thoughts on this????? Thnx.

I saw it too. I really like SS. I am 1 1/2 yrs. post meno. I see why I have had such trouble losing wt. over those years. I struggle with the sleep issue and wonder what can be done about that. I heard her mention cortisol in regard to sleep issues. I wonder if it is to much or to little. Did anyone catch that?

  2. Visitor Says:

I think it is too little cortisol.

I’m going to an new doctor for me..an endo next Tuesday. I am hypothyroid. I’m hoping she tests my hormones.. I don’t think I have any estrogen left..

In Suz. new book about hormone therapy she totally discusses the subject and all her routine is…. she even lists Drs around the country that will help with this…. I was sorta discouraged with the book since I found only 1 DR listed around me and it is several towns away….. and I would wonder how terrible much doing all she does would cost. I don’t take any hormones…… however I do wake up a few times every night (frown) It would be good to see how it would help me feel…. I found as I started doing more exercise and taking some regular vitamins (especially the rebounding exercise) that I started feeling much better and sleeping better also. I very seldom drink diet pop anymore… and I know that has helped me feel alot better. I do take melatonin and also tylenol pm in order to sleep though… so I would be interested in finding out how it would affect that. (smile) Anyone know where there is a money tree… thinking it sure would come in handy. LOL

Would not mess with hormones. But then again I’m a re-born skeptic and cynic.
Even in my swallowing loads of supplement days I wouldn’t mess with hormones.

I do take melatonin once in a while to sleep, but so many of the ladies in the audience couldn’t sleep very well. Maybe they take in too much caffeine..I do agree that exercise does help Norene.

Jezzie: I’m kinda with you…(although I want my thyroid hormone to work), with the
estrogen stuff..I think as we age, then our hormones diminish naturally..

That’s part of the problem with these health issues, everyone who has a "theory" writes a book, sells the book to millions, and then, they have enough money to do things to look good, so they can write more books, and go on tv selling them to other hapless people. Mentioning "theories" that may or may not work anyway. And we lap it up. "We" meaning the public in general out there.

I never took hormones either, got through the menopause, didn’t like it, but got through it, lol. Heck, my almost 96 year old mother still gets hot flashes now and then. I think it’s just our luck being women, God was sexist when he invented us perhaps……………

Me neither don’t take anything. I too have pre-cancerous breast cancer so no estrogen for me.

Carolyn, our bodies do make estrogen even though the ovaries may have been removed, or we have gone or going thru menopause. Fat cells store estrogen too so being overweight can feed a cancerous tumour, another good reason to lose weight.

I found when I took melatonin it gave me a headache the next day, so its no good for me.

I did not see SS on Oprah. I missed that. It would have been interesting to hear the discussion at least.

    Just adding my two cents.

I am in perimenopause and while I’ve had several minor symptoms, I have never had a full blown hot flash, night sweats or trouble sleeping. I do have a lot of trouble losing weight even though I exercise a lot and very intensely. I eat mostly whole foods, fast food is only a couple times a year and we don’t use many processed foods. Friends have suggested that I get my hormone levels checked.

And had a Dr. put me on a high dose of estrogen in my thirties.
He claimed I had a high percentage of "immature cells". And I bought it.
He told me not to tell my OB/GYN. Think I should have had a clue?

I read SS book, and there is no Dr like that around here at all. And the bioidentical hormone pharmacy around here? HAHAHAHAH. Anyhoo. I need hrt cause I am dry. Thats all I am saying about that. BUT I refuse to take it because of cancer issues. My husband suffers in the long run, but geez… I refuse Premarin cream for sure. ITs horrible. And thats what she wants to give me for the drying issue. That or the patch, which has estrogen/progesterone. I have tried vit e caps they do not work on me at all. Guess chalk it up to old age and just keep on keeping on.
